Welcome to the SCSC Dr. Heather McGhee, post-doctoral fellow! 💜

Heather recently completed her Ph.D. at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) under the mentorship of Dr. Heather Bonilha. She holds a B.S. from The University of Georgia and an M.S. from Florida State University. With 20 years of clinical experience, she has dedicated most of her career to specialized pediatric care, focusing on NICU patients and those with airway and craniofacial conditions. During her time at MUSC, Heather was a member of the NICU Feeding, Aerodigestive, and Craniofacial and Velopharyngeal Insufficiency teams. Her clinical and research interests center on feeding and swallowing disorders in premature infants.

It was wonderful to come together as a lab and plan for a productive 2024-2025 academic and professional year!

The SCSC extends a warm welcome to our newest lab

The SCSC extends a warm welcome to our newest lab member, Dr. Ankita Bhutada.  Ankita is a postdoctoral fellow within the SCSC. She earned her PhD at the University of South Alabama. She has been a practicing speech-language pathologist for approximately 11 years across a continuum of care. Her clinical and research interests include swallowing disorders in medically complex and fragile populations, including sleep-related breathing disorders. Her research has been funded by the ASHFoundation and Indian Federation of Neurorehabilitation.

Updated ACR-SPR Practice Parameters for the Modified Barium Swallow Study

The modified barium swallow study (MBSS) is a videofluoroscopic imaging study used to evaluate oral and pharyngeal swallowing function and airway protection. The exam is typically performed by a radiologist together with a speech-language pathologist (SLP). The American College of Radiology (ACR) creates and periodically updates Practice Parameters and Technical Standards for various radiologic procedures, including the MBSS. The goal of these Practice Parameters is to “promote the safe and effective use of diagnostic and therapeutic radiology by describing specific training, skills, and techniques,” and to “narrow the variability among radiology practices and provide guidance to achieve quality in radiology.” In 2023, the ACR partnered with the Society of Pediatric Radiology (SPR) to update the MBSS Practice Parameter. This webinar will summarize the updated ACR-SPR Practice Parameter for the Performance of the Modified Barium Swallow Study by three experts in the fields of speech-language pathology, adult radiology, and pediatric radiology.
