Northwestern Memorial Hospital Swallowing Center

Northwestern Memorial Hospital is an 885 bed academic medical center located in the heart of downtown Chicago. The hospital has been listed by the U.S. News & World Report as the #1 hospital in the state of Illinois, and one of fifteen hospitals to receive Best Hospital Honor Roll recognition. With 13 nationally ranked specialties, including pulmonary, neurology, otolaryngology, and gastroenterology, Northwestern Memorial provides a fertile environment for the development and execution of interdisciplinary clinical-research investigations. Within Northwestern Memorial Hospital is the Northwestern Memorial Hospital Swallowing Center. This 1,195 square foot space is located on the seventeenth floor of the hospital’s Arkes Pavilion. The center houses state of the art equipment that enables clinicians and researchers to make refined measurements of aerodigestive function. This includes the evaluation of oropharyngeal swallow physiology through the use of high-resolution videofluoroscopy and flexible and rigid endoscopic imaging and recording, respiratory physiology through the use of respiratory inductance plethysmography, and oral, pharyngeal, and esophageal muscle contraction through the use of electromyography. Northwestern Memorial Hospital Swallowing Center is staffed by licensed and certified Speech-Language Pathologists who are actively engaged in research to ensure they are providing patients with the most up-to-date evidence based care.

Northwestern University Clinic

The Northwestern University Center for Audiology, Speech, Language, and Learning offers clinical care built on a foundation of knowledge, expertise, and compassion to helps infants through adults develop and rehabilitate their everyday abilities. The specialized services offered at the clinic address a host of hearing, learning, speech-language, and swallowing deficits. 12 speech language pathology and 4 audiology clinical faculty members direct services in partnership with medical teams, educators, and other professionals to ensure comprehensive care for each client. The clinic, initially established in 1928, underwent a renovation in 2015 to provide clinicians with a 22,600 square foot state-of-the-art facility. This 37 room facility serves as a translational research center, where clinicians and researchers work side by side to develop clinically relevant innovations that are rapidly disseminated to provide patients with best, scientifically validated clinical care.

Our University clinic, located in Evanston, IL serves as the primary hub for all outpatient speech, language, cognitive, and voice therapy. Appointments can be scheduled online  or by phone through the scheduling line at 847-491-3165.
