In addition, Nadia has been awarded the School of Communication Roy V. Wood Scholarship, which recognizes an outstanding graduating senior for excellence in scholarship and leadership.

We are incredibly proud of Nadia and Emma and all they have accomplished during their time with our lab. We look forward to seeing all they achieve in the future! 🎉
Research Opportunity for Speech-Language Pathologi Research Opportunity for Speech-Language Pathologists

SCSC PhD candidate, Zoë Kiemel, is conducting a study examining current clinical practices related to videofluoroscopic swallow studies (VFSS) in infant populations.

We are seeking speech-language pathologists (SLPs) with experience working with infants and performing VFSS to complete a brief survey.

The study aims to explore:
✅ Routine VFSS administration and documentation practices
✅ Common clinical approaches across settings
✅ Site policies and procedures
✅ Barriers and facilitators impacting VFSS implementation

Your participation will help advance our understanding of current practice patterns and inform future research and clinical guidelines.

Please consider participating and sharing with eligible colleagues!

Members of the Swallowing Cross-Systems Collaborat Members of the Swallowing Cross-Systems Collaborative laced up this week for the Dash for Dysphagia!

We walked in honor of the patients we serve and to raise awareness about the importance of dysphagia research, education, and advocacy!
Our lab was honored to volunteer at the Lurie Canc Our lab was honored to volunteer at the Lurie Cancer Center Survivors’ Celebration Walk & 5K today in recognition of National Cancer Survivors Day.

It was truly inspiring to hear the stories of survivors, celebrate their strength and resilience, and come together in support of the cancer community.

Thank you to everyone who shared their journey and helped make this day such a meaningful celebration of life. 💜
Congratulations Dr. Ankita Bhutada, SCSC Post-Doct Congratulations Dr. Ankita Bhutada, SCSC Post-Doctoral Fellow!

Dr. Bhutada was awarded the Northwestern University Alumnae Grant to further her work on LLM-assisted clinical trial eligibility approaches for swallowing and motor speech in Parkinson’s disease research. This support will help advance ongoing efforts, building on ASHFoundation-funded work, focused on improving research workflows and patient identification in dysphagia and neurodegenerative disease research.
As we wrap up Better Speech-Language-Hearing Month As we wrap up Better Speech-Language-Hearing Month, 2nd-year graduate student research intern Laura shares what inspires her passion for the field of Speech-Language Pathology

SLP services have the power to empower patients. Through education and evidence-based treatment, we can help individuals participate more fully in their lives and make informed decisions about their care.

We’re proud to celebrate the future clinicians and researchers dedicated to advancing compassionate, patient-centered care.
For Better Speech-Language-Hearing Month, SCSC PhD For Better Speech-Language-Hearing Month, SCSC PhD candidate, Zoë Kiemel, shares what inspired her to pursue a career in research and her passion for advancing infant feeding and swallowing care through science.

Research plays an important role in improving patient outcomes and shaping the future of the field. We’re proud to celebrate the students, researchers, and clinicians working to make a difference through research, advocacy, and compassionate care. 💜
Meet Hui, SCSC Student Research Intern Advocacy, Meet Hui, SCSC Student Research Intern

Advocacy, accessibility, and patient-centered care inspired Hui to pursue the field of Speech-Language Pathology.

Through her work with SCSC, she contributes to research, community outreach, and clinical initiatives focused on supporting individuals with communication and swallowing disorders and expanding access to care for underserved communities.

Through these efforts, we aim to advance more equitable care and improve outcomes for the patients and families we serve.
