New Publication! “Using the BaByVFSSImP to Charac New Publication!

“Using the BaByVFSSImP to Characterize the Impact of Thin and Mildly Thick Liquid Consistencies on Swallowing in Bottle-Fed Infants,” is now published in the American Journal of Speech-Language Pathology!

Key Findings:
Using data from 225 infants, this study found that mildly thick liquids were associated with better (lower) impairment scores than thin liquids on 3 physiological domains:

• Palatal-Pharyngeal Approximation (Domain 2) — p = .02
• Airway Invasion/Laryngeal Closure (Domain 3) — p < .0001
• Aspiration (Domain 4) — p < .0001

Domains that did not differ by consistency included:
• Lingual Motion/Pharyngeal Swallow Initiation (Domain 1)
• Pharyngeal Transport and Clearance (Domain 5)

These results highlight how thickened liquids can influence swallowing physiology in infants, supporting more evidence-based pediatric dysphagia management. Additional studies are needed to guide clinical decisions about thickening liquids for individual and well-defined populations of children.

Congratulations to SCSC post-doctoral fellow, Dr. Congratulations to SCSC post-doctoral fellow, Dr. Ankita Bhutada! 🎉

We are proud to announce that Dr. Ankita Bhutada has been awarded the American Speech-Language-Hearing Foundation (ASHF) New Investigator’s Research Grant for her study: “Accelerating Parkinson’s Disease Clinical Research in Swallowing and Motor Speech Disorders: A Novel Large-Language Model-Based Solution for Optimizing Clinical Trials Efficiency”!

The ASHF New Investigator’s Grant supports early-career researchers through one-year preliminary studies that lay the foundation for larger-scale, clinically relevant work in audiology and speech-language pathology.

We look forward to the impact of Dr. Bhutada’s research on advancing clinical trial efficiency in Parkinson’s disease.

Zoë successfully defended her qualifying research project (QRP) entitled “Concurrent Use of Videofluoroscopic and Nutritional Intake Measures in the Assessment of Pediatric Patients With Dysphagia: A Scoping Review” and achieved doctoral candidacy!

Way to go, Zoë!
The SCSC is excited to welcome first year doctoral The SCSC is excited to welcome first year doctoral student, Paige Wintermute, MS, CCC-SLP to our team!

Paige is a pediatric speech-language pathologist. She earned a B.A. in Communication Disorders from Geneva College in 2019 and M.S. in Speech and Hearing Sciences from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2021. She has since served children with complex medical needs as an SLP in the acute care setting at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, where she also completed her clinical fellowship in speech-language pathology and the Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities fellowship program. Paige is passionate about pediatric feeding and swallowing and the standardization of pediatric care, with specific interests in oncologic, traumatic, neurodevelopmental, and other neurological etiologies of dysphagia and communication needs.

Welcome Paige!! 💜
