The Swallowing Cross-Systems Collaborative [SCSC]
Northwestern University
Principal Investigator and Lab Executive Director: Dr. Bonnie Martin-Harris

Congratulations Dr. Ankita Bhutada, SCSC Post-Doct Congratulations Dr. Ankita Bhutada, SCSC Post-Doctoral Fellow!

Dr. Bhutada was awarded the Northwestern University Alumnae Grant to further her work on LLM-assisted clinical trial eligibility approaches for swallowing and motor speech in Parkinson’s disease research. This support will help advance ongoing efforts, building on ASHFoundation-funded work, focused on improving research workflows and patient identification in dysphagia and neurodegenerative disease research.
As we wrap up Better Speech-Language-Hearing Month As we wrap up Better Speech-Language-Hearing Month, 2nd-year graduate student research intern Laura shares what inspires her passion for the field of Speech-Language Pathology

SLP services have the power to empower patients. Through education and evidence-based treatment, we can help individuals participate more fully in their lives and make informed decisions about their care.

We’re proud to celebrate the future clinicians and researchers dedicated to advancing compassionate, patient-centered care.
For Better Speech-Language-Hearing Month, SCSC PhD For Better Speech-Language-Hearing Month, SCSC PhD candidate, Zoë Kiemel, shares what inspired her to pursue a career in research and her passion for advancing infant feeding and swallowing care through science.

Research plays an important role in improving patient outcomes and shaping the future of the field. We’re proud to celebrate the students, researchers, and clinicians working to make a difference through research, advocacy, and compassionate care. 💜
Meet Hui, SCSC Student Research Intern Advocacy, Meet Hui, SCSC Student Research Intern

Advocacy, accessibility, and patient-centered care inspired Hui to pursue the field of Speech-Language Pathology.

Through her work with SCSC, she contributes to research, community outreach, and clinical initiatives focused on supporting individuals with communication and swallowing disorders and expanding access to care for underserved communities.

Through these efforts, we aim to advance more equitable care and improve outcomes for the patients and families we serve.
What inspires someone to pursue a career in Speech What inspires someone to pursue a career in Speech-Language Pathology?

For Briana, that inspiration started close to home. Motivated by her brother, she discovered a passion for supporting individuals with communication and swallowing disorders and making a meaningful difference through patient care.

As an SCSC Student Research Intern, Briana is gaining hands-on experience in research while exploring the connection between clinical care and scientific discovery.

We’re proud to support future clinicians and researchers dedicated to improving the lives of the patients we serve!
Meet Katie Lynch, SCSC Student Research Intern and Meet Katie Lynch, SCSC Student Research Intern and 2nd-year graduate student!
Katie shares what inspired her to pursue a career in Speech-Language Pathology and her passion for supporting individuals with communication and swallowing disorders.

We’re proud to highlight the students, researchers, and future clinicians helping advance compassionate, evidence-based care through the work we do at SCSC 🤍💜
In celebration of National Speech-Language-Hearing In celebration of National Speech-Language-Hearing Month, our lab is launching a month-long social media series featuring student spotlight reels, research highlights, and educational posts focused on swallowing and dysphagia!

Our student videos will share why they chose speech-language pathology, what the field means to them, and what inspires them within communication sciences and disorders. Alongside these, we’ll highlight ongoing research and share educational content centered on swallowing physiology, dysphagia, and clinical practice.

We’re excited to showcase both the people and the science behind our work. 💜
🏃‍♀️ Join the SCSC Lab for the DRS Dash for Dyspha 🏃‍♀️ Join the SCSC Lab for the DRS Dash for Dysphagia! 🏃‍♂️

We’re excited to be participating in the Dysphagia Research Society (DRS) Dash for Dysphagia- a virtual run/walk bringing together clinicians, researchers, and colleagues worldwide to support dysphagia research, education, and professional development.

Dysphagia affects millions of lives, yet it often goes unseen. Every step we take helps bring visibility to swallowing disorders and moves research forward toward better care, better outcomes, and better quality of life for the patients we serve.
